Have credit card debt? You don’t have to sacrifice rewards with these 5 balance transfer cards

Paying down credit card debt doesn't have to come at the cost of earning rewards

Share

Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.

If you're dealing with some credit card debt, you're not alone. Total credit card debt in the U.S. has risen by $70 billion from Q1 2025 to Q1 2026. Further, the June 2026 consumer price index (CPI) report showed a 4.2% year-over-year increase in May, with no signs of relief for consumers covering everyday costs like gas and groceries.

If you're looking for a way to pay down debt, you can do so without sacrificing your ability to earn rewards. Many cards that offer intro APR periods often do so at the cost of other benefits, but some cards offer both. This could be a great option if you're looking for a balance transfer card but still want it to be useful down the road.

CNBC Select highlights five no-annual-fee credit cards that offer an intro APR on balance transfers and earn rewards on your spending.

Balance transfer cards with rewards

If you want flat-rate rewards

If you're looking for a card that keeps things simple, the Citi Double Cash® Card is one of the best available. Earning a flat 2% cash back (1% when you buy, then 1% when you pay), the card also offers a 0% introductory APR for 18 months on balance transfers (17.49% to 27.49% variable APR thereafter).

A flat-rate 2% cash-back card is pretty much the best available on the market, so the addition of an 18-month 0% APR is great for those who have some debt they've been struggling to make a dent in.

Plus, the card's $200 cash-back welcome bonus is fairly easy to earn, requiring $1,500 in spending over six months, or an average of $250 per month.

Balance transfer fee: Intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5) completed within the first four months of account opening; 5% of each transfer (minimum $5) thereafter

What makes the Citi Double Cash® Card special is that it sits near the top of its class in several categories. It is an excellent option if you want flat-rate rewards, a balance transfer intro-APR or no annual fee.

  • Balance transfers get a long intro APR
  • Generous flat-rate cash-back rewards structure
  • Earns transferable rewards
  • No annual fee
  • It has a foreign transaction fee
  • Intro APR only applies to balance transfer
  • Points transfer ratios are reduced compared to premium cards

Highlights

Highlights shown here are provided by the issuer and have not been reviewed by CNBC Select's editorial staff.

  • Earn $200 cash back after you spend $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months of account opening. This bonus offer will be fulfilled as 20,000 ThankYou® Points, which can be redeemed for $200 cash back.
  • Earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. To earn cash back, pay at least the minimum due on time. Plus, earn 5% total cash back on hotel, car rentals and attractions booked with Citi Travel.
  • Balance Transfer Only Offer: 0% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 18 months. After that, the variable APR will be 17.49% - 27.49%, based on your creditworthiness.
  • Balance Transfers do not earn cash back. Intro APR does not apply to purchases.
  • If you transfer a balance, interest will be charged on your purchases unless you pay your entire balance (including balance transfers) by the due date each month.
  • There is an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. After that, your fee will be 5% of each transfer (minimum $5).

If you're more familiar with Capital One or want a card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees, the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card is another flat-rate option, earning 1.5% cash back on all purchases.

While its 0% APR offer is three months shorter, it offers 15 months interest-free on both purchases and balance transfers, followed by a variable APR of 18.49% to 28.49%. The rewards rate is slightly lower compared to the Double Cash, but it could make sense if you travel a little more frequently, as transaction fees can quickly add up.

Pros and cons of earning rewards while paying off debt

While using a rewards balance transfer card to help you better manage your debt can often be a great tool, there are a few downsides to be aware of before you apply.

Pros
  • Rewards can help accelerate debt payments: If you redeem the rewards you earn for a statement credit or direct deposit, you can use the money to help pay down debt a little faster; even 2% adds up over time.
  • Get a rebate on necessary spending: We all have necessary spending — from weekly groceries to gas purchases. Earning rewards on expenses you need to cover anyway can help recoup a bit of the cost.
  • Provides lasting value: These reward credit cards can still offer value down the line, even once you've paid off all of your debt.
Cons
  • Fees: Many balance transfer cards charge a fee for the process, which is typically either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer (whichever is greater) but can vary by card.
  • Credit score requirements: Cards that offer a 0% APR period, either on purchases or balance transfers, often have higher credit score requirements for approval.
  • Rewards could encourage more spending: If you already struggle with making credit card payments on time, earning rewards could encourage spending above your means.
