Here are the best ways to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points

Chase Ultimate Rewards® points offer amazing value. Here's how to maximize them.

Share

Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are known for packing an impressive punch and delivering some of the highest value in the credit card rewards business.

Beyond convenience, Chase points have the potential to be worth 50% or 100% more when they are redeemed through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal by using Chase's Points Boost feature.

And if travel loyalty programs are your thing, Chase points can score you a bigger bang for your buck with higher-than-average redemption rates when transferred to one or more of Chase's dozen-plus airline and hotel partners.

Below, CNBC Select breaks down some of our favorite ways to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards® points.

Best ways to redeem Chase points

Transfer to airline or hotel partners

The Chase travel portal is a great place to book travel fast, but transferring points to one of Chase's 14 travel partners will stretch your rewards even further.

Ultimate Rewards® points can be transferred to travel partners at a 1:1 ratio (unless marked) with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees), Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees), Sapphire Reserve for BusinessSM (see rates and fees) or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card (see rates and fees). You can transfer points to the following partners:

Valuable Chase redemption examples

You can get outsized value from your Chase points when transferring to airline or hotel partners.

World of Hyatt

Despite recently undergoing transfer ratio devaluations for select Chase cards, the World of Hyatt hotel program can still present some of the best value for Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Reserve for Business cardholders.

With categories ranging from 1 through 8 (and getting more luxurious as they go up), you can book luxurious hotels, like the Park Hyatt Maldives or Park Hyatt Sydney for as little as 25,000 points a night. These hotels can often cost more than $1,000 a night.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Chase cardholders can redeem Virgin Atlantic miles to fly domestic itineraries on Delta starting at just 7,500 miles per segment, which can be a steal compared to what Delta charges customers when using Delta SkyMiles for the same flight. And Delta One business class flights from the U.S. to Europe (with the exception of the U.K.) are 47,500 Virgin Atlantic miles for nonstop itineraries.

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards

Since Southwest moved to a dynamic pricing system, it can be harder to find standout options, but transfers work best in a few select scenarios. Since transferring Chase points usually happens either almost instantly or by the end of the next business day, you can often wait until you've found your specific flight deal.

And if you have a Southwest Airlines Companion Pass, you can book two flights for the price of one (excluding taxes and fees), in which case you can essentially be getting double the value of your points. While you do have to designate a specific "Companion," this can be great when traveling with a significant other or friend.

Redeem for travel through the Chase portal

When you book travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal, your points can be worth up to 1.50 cents each with the Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred or all the way to 2.0 cents each with the Sapphire Reserve or Sapphire Reserve for Business

That means you could book a $750 flight (on any airline) via Chase Travel℠ for 50,000 points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

Tip: If you've been considering a Chase card, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is matching its best-ever welcome offer: Earn 100,000 points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

This option is great because you can book with virtually any airline or hotel on the portal and there are no blackout dates. You're not limited to Chase travel partners and their respective award availability, which can sometimes be hard to find.

That being said, Chase determines which select flights or hotels qualify for Points Boost, so it often depends on your travel plans if you can get extra value from this system.

Use Chase Pay Yourself Back

Chase introduced "Pay Yourself Back" as a way to get good value from your points outside of travel, while still getting almost cash value.

Pay Yourself Back allows cardholders to redeem points for statement credits on up to 12 recent purchases made within the last 90 days. These points transfer at 1 cent apiece, but Chase offers certain promotional categories where your transfer rate will be elevated.

For example, Chase once offered pet supply stores and veterinary services as a bonus category that earned 10% more value when redeeming points. If you redeemed your points for a statement credit toward a qualifying purchase, instead of 100 points being worth $1, they were worth $1.10.

The exact categories and bonus transfer rates you see will vary between cards, with premium cards typically offering higher rates.

Which Chase credit cards earn Ultimate Rewards points?
