How to choose a gas credit card

Picking the right gas credit card can be tricky. There are often restrictions on what qualifies as a gas station. For example, most cards exclude gas purchased from superstores, supermarkets and wholesale clubs, such as Costco and BJ's. Additionally, some cards might cap the bonus rewards you can earn on gas in a year.

Before signing up for a gas rewards card, take the time to consider how to maximize the points you earn. If you have to go out of the way to buy gas from a qualifying station, or you can fill up for significantly less using your Costco membership, you might be better off going with a different rewards card.

None of the cards on our best list are connected with a specific gas station brand, and most of them also offer strong rewards in other categories, including supermarkets and restaurants. We recognize that most people don't spend exclusively in one category and consider that when recommending cards.

Benefits of a gas credit card

Having a credit card that rewards gas purchases makes sense because it's such a common, unavoidable expense. These cards can also provide perks and benefits that go beyond the pump. Some even earn travel rewards, which tend to be worth more than cash back or other types of credit card rewards.

Gas credit cards are still credit cards and typically carry higher interest rates than other forms of consumer debt. You may also find that some of the credit cards with the highest rate of return for gas purchases also have caps on the bonus rewards you can earn on fuel.

Pros
  • Many cards feature introductory welcome bonuses or 0% APRs
  • Ability to earn high rewards on an unavoidable expense
  • May gas cards also reward you for EV charging, if you own an electric vehicle
Cons
  • May have a spending cap on rewards each month, quarter or year
  • Some fuel purchases may not qualify, such as gas purchases at wholesale clubs

Why get a gas credit card?

The most obvious reason to get a gas credit card is to cut costs at the pump. But these credit cards often earn discounts for EV charging and bonus rewards on all sorts of spending, including dining out, grocery shopping and travel.

So you can get straight cash back or start working toward your next vacation by earning loads of travel rewards.

FAQs

Though gas prices have been high the past few months due to a decline in oil production and the Iran war, the average cost of a gallon of gas has already gone down roughly 12% compared to last month.

There are a few ways that consumers can save money on gas. The first is paying with a rewards credit card that offers extra points or cash back on gas purchases. You can also save on gas by using an app to find the cheapest gas stations and joining a gas loyalty program.

There are rewards credit cards that offer as much as 5X bonus points or 5% cash back on gas purchases. The best card for you will ultimately depend on your personal spending habits and goals, but some of our top picks with no annual fee include the PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature® Card and the Citi Strata Premier® Card.

Why trust CNBC Select?

At CNBC Select, our mission is to provide our readers with high-quality service journalism and comprehensive consumer advice so they can make informed decisions with their money. Every credit card review is based on rigorous reporting by our team of expert writers and editors with extensive knowledge of credit card products. While CNBC Select earns a commission from affiliate partners on many offers and links, we create all our content without input from our commercial team or any outside third parties, and we pride ourselves on our journalistic standards and ethics. See our methodology for more information on how we choose the best gas credit cards.

Our methodology

To determine which cards offer the best value for gas spending, CNBC Select analyzed over 250 major credit cards issued through FDIC-insured banks and NCUA-insured credit unions that are widely available in the U.S.

We compared each card on a range of features, including rewards (e.g., cash back, points and miles), annual fees, welcome bonuses, introductory and standard APR and balance transfer fees and foreign transaction fees. We also considered additional perks (e.g., ongoing travel or merchant statement credits), cardholder protections (e.g., purchase protection, $0 liability protection and travel insurance), the application process when available (e.g., is there a credit pull or required credit score) and how easy it is to redeem points (e.g., are rewards are tied to a specific brand; if transferable, to how many/which partners, can you redeem for straight cash back).

When choosing the best gas credit cards, we focused on cards that offer additional rewards for gas purchases or transactions at gas stations. Given the growing popularity of electric vehicles, we also more heavily valued cards that provide bonus rewards for EV charging, as well.

We also considered CNBC Select audience data when available, such as general demographics and engagement with our content and tools.
